~Jesus Today Devotional 8th February,2014

One of the first teachings of Jesus was about humility. In Matthew 5:5, it reads” blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth”. In other words God is ready to give the earth to people who are humble. Now the bible says the the earth is Gods footstool, so if God is ready to give his footstool to the meek it shows how much God values humility. Remember that it was pride that caused Lucifer to stir up rebellion in heaven. Humility plays a very important role in our prayer and can determine whether it will be productive or not. Let’s read Luke 18:10, ” Two men went to the temple to pray. One was a proud self righteous Pharasee, and the other a cheating tax collector. The proud Pharasee prayed this prayer: “Thank God am not a sinner like everyone else, especially like that tax collector over there! For I never cheat, I don’t commit adultery, I go without food twice a week, and I give to God a tenth of everything I earn.” 13 But the corrupt tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift up his eyes to heaven as he prayed, but beat his chest in sorrow, exclaiming, ” God be merciful to me a sinner.”14 I tell you this sinner, not this Pharasee, returned home forgiven! For the proud shall be humbled but the humble shall be honoured”. God hates pride and every appearance of pride, no wonder the pharasee even though he fasted twice a week and gave a tithe of everything he earned still didn’t get Gods approval.

There are many people today who think they are approved by their self righteousness and good works even when they are proud. We are made to understand from the word of God that God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble. You can’t have a fruitful prayer life when the person you are praying to is resisting you. As long as pride is in you, you can’t possibly have a successful prayer life. Flee from every appearance of pride and pray that God fills you with more humility.

Let’s read 2nd Chronicles 7:14-15, “If my people who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and would heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears will be attentive to the prayers offered in this place”. Humility is important if you want your prayers to be productive. God shuts his ears and his eyes to the prayers of the proud.
